A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” stated the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
