New research reveals that patients who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing such treatments must be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to starting weight within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists note that people who lose weight through dieting typically experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
People who have come off the jabs explain a sudden return of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," recalled one woman.
This challenge is worsened if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural management.
